Director Of Bands

Melvin N. Miles, Jr., Director of University Bands and Instructor of Music at Morgan State University, is the conductor of the Morgan State University Symphonic Winds, Concert Band and the MSU Jazz Ensemble. In addition, his responsibilities include directing the Morgan State University Marching Band “The Magnificent Marching Machine”, the "Bear Band"- MSU's Pep Band, and the MSU Jazz Combo.   As an instructor in the Fine Arts Department, Mr. Miles teaches Instrumental Music Methods and coordinates the wind, percussion and string faculty.  Melvin Miles has served on the Morgan State University faculty since 1973.

A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Melvin attended Frederick Douglass High School and received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees in Music Education from Morgan State University.  He attended The Catholic University of America for doctoral studies in Music Education. Mr. Miles is an active arranger and maintains an energetic performance schedule guest conducting Symphonic and Jazz Honor Bands through out the nation, as well as participating in adjudicating activities and presenting workshops and seminars on all styles and types of music and music education.  He has written numerous arrangements performed by the Morgan State University Marching and Pep Bands and heard throughout the nation during the football and basketball seasons.  For many years, "Miles" composed, adapted and arranged musical scores and served as the Musical Director for the "Encore Dinner Theater". In addition, he arranged and performed several selections for as well as appeared in Barry Levinson's movies "Diner" and "Avalon". 

Melvin Miles is a member of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity (Past National President and Chairman Board of Trustees), and Tau Beta Sigma National Honorary Band Sorority. In March 2003, he received Kappa Kappa Psi’s highest award the “Distinguished Service to Music Medal”. In addition, he holds active membership in the Council of Higher Education in Music (Past President), Music Educators National Conference, Maryland Music Educators Association, College Band Directors Association (State Chairman), Maryland Band Directors Association, HBCU-National Band Directors Consortium, International Association of Jazz Educators, Promethean Kappa Tau, Alpha Psi Omega National Honorary Society and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

Melvin Miles resides in Baltimore, Maryland with his wife Cathy.
